Orthopedic & Sports Institute – Patient Surgery Checklist

A Step-by-Step Guide from 30 Days Before Surgery to the Day of Surgery

30 Days Before Surgery

  • Schedule Your Pre-Operative Exam
Set an appointment with your Primary Care Provider (PCP) or another general provider for your pre-operative clearance exam.
  • Opt-In to Text Message Updates
Once your surgery is scheduled, you’ll receive a text invitation to join our secure communication system.
We highly recommend opting in to receive important and timely updates about your upcoming surgery.

7 Days Before Surgery

  • Do NOT Shave the Surgical Site
Avoid shaving to reduce infection risk. Any open areas, nicks, scrapes, or cuts near the surgical site may delay your surgery.
  • Report Skin Issues
Contact the surgeon’s office if you notice any of the following at or near the surgical site:

    • Rashes
    • Bug bites
    • Open wounds
    • Other skin concerns
  • Report Any Illnesses
Notify the surgeon’s office if you develop symptoms such as:

    • Fever
    • Diarrhea
    • Vomiting
    • Shortness of breath
    • Productive cough
  • Review Your Medications
Speak with your PCP regarding which medications to stop. In most cases, begin holding:

    • All vitamins and supplements
    • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.)
    • Certain injections
  • Hold Blood Thinners
If taking blood thinners (e.g., Aspirin, Eliquis, Xarelto, Plavix, Warfarin), you will likely need to stop them.
Follow the instructions given by your PCP during your pre-surgical appointment.

Begin your surgeon’s recommended skin prep routine—this may include special soaps or wipes.

If not enrolled in text messaging, you’ll receive a phone call instead.

Use of these substances could result in your surgery being delayed or canceled.

  • Only ONE support person is allowed in the pre-op and post-op areas at a time
  • You must have a responsible adult available to assist you for at least 24 hours after surgery
  • Transportation is REQUIRED

    • If you arrive without a qualified driver, your surgery will be postponed.
    • Your driver/support person must be present for discharge instructions.
