Expectations of a Support Person
A responsible adult who is physically able and willing to assist the patient post-operatively is essential for a successful recovery following outpatient joint replacement surgery.
The support person should NOT be:
- Disabled, deconditioned or requiring assistance (e.g., using crutches, a cane, a walker, or a wheelchair).
- Unable to perform physical tasks such as lifting or supporting the patient.
The support person must:
- Have adequate upper body strength to assist the patient as needed.
- Be physically capable of completing the required responsibilities listed below.
Before and Day of Surgery:
- Attend a pre-operative physical therapy education session for hip or knee surgery.
- Prepare the home based on the physical therapist’s recommendations (e.g., shower chair, toilet riser, grab bars if advised).
- Drive the patient home after surgery and be comfortable driving at night if needed.
- Be present for discharge instructions and stair demonstration (for hip and knee surgeries).
After Surgery:
- Stay with the patient 24/7 for a minimum of 72 hours post-surgery or longer if needed.
- Assist with mobility:
- For hip/knee surgery, walk alongside the patient holding their gait belt for at least 24 hours to reduce fall risk at home or longer if needed.
- For shoulder surgery, assist with sling positioning and dressing.
- Monitor medications and watch for side effects, including:
- Itching, confusion, poor appetite, nausea, constipation, drowsiness, or sleeplessness.
- Help with daily tasks, including:
- Chores and meal preparation (patients will not be able to stand for long periods for the first 1–2 weeks).
- Carrying items (as patients using a walker or sling will have difficulty doing so).
- Encourage and coach the patient through prescribed exercises.
- Assist with surgical extremity positioning.
- Provide transportation to physical therapy and post-operative appointments.
