Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley offers next generation of robotic surgery in knee and hip replacements

Innovative technology allows surgeons to customize procedures to each patient

APPLETON, Wis. (May 19, 2017) – Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley (OSI) is the first surgery center in northeast Wisconsin to offer Stryker’s Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Partial Knee, Total Hip and Total Knee replacement procedures. This latest advancement in robotic technology changes the way these surgeries are performed.

Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery is a new surgical approach to joint replacement and offers a higher level of customization for implant alignment and positioning. More than 83,000 Mako hip and knee replacements have been performed. The technology allows surgeons to create a patient-specific 3D plan that uses a CT scan to guide the reconstruction plan, taking into account each patient's specific anatomy and ligament balance, to complete the surgery with a high degree of accuracy. Studies have shown robotic-arm assisted partial knee replacements to be two to three times more accurate than manual partial knee replacement procedures.

“Mako is changing the way joint replacement surgeries are performed by providing each patient with a customized surgical experience based on their specific diagnosis and anatomy,” Dr. David Eggert, a surgeon at Orthopedic & Sports Institute of the Fox Valley, said. “Using a virtual 3D model, the Mako System allows surgeons to create each patient’s surgical plan pre-operatively before entering the operating room.”

OSI is an expert in joint replacement surgery. Last year nearly 400 procedures were performed, with a complication rate of less than one percent.

OSI also offers Recovery Inn, a one of a kind recovery facility for patients, following surgery. The facility is designed like a five-star hotel with a focus on privacy and comfort, all while providing personalized care to ensure the patient’s complete healing.

OSI will offer the same price structure for total joint replacement whether a patient chooses to receive the joint with or without the robotic technology. This is part of its commitment to offer the latest innovation while maintaining its competitive edge in the region.

The Mako robotic-arm technology is offered by OSI physicians located throughout the Fox Cities including Dr. Errol Springer, Dr. David Eggert, Dr. Padraic Obma and Dr. Ken Schaufelberger. Patients can request an appointment for a Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery consultation by visiting osifv.com/robot or by calling 920-560-1000.

OSI brings together everything necessary for non-surgical, surgical and post-surgical orthopedic care all in one place, including an ambulatory surgery center, physician clinics, physical therapy, MRI, orthotics and pain management as well as the nation’s first Recovery Inn dedicated to orthopedics. By focusing on orthopedics only, OSI is able to cut costs, ensure quality and speed along recovery for a convenient, comfortable and memorable patient experience.
